Turn Your Short Story Into a Novel
This week, I want to let you know about a pet project of mine. It's one that I'm very excited about. Over the past few years, we have found a markedly increased interest in memoir among our members. It makes sense. The twenty-twenties have been trying and many struggle to make sense of it, and their lives in general. Collective existential crisis, anyone? In response to this demand, I have developed a memoir writing curriculum I think will both satisfy a widespread need and approach a valuable writing tradition in a new and helpful way.
But more about that in a bit. First let’s talk about memoir in general, and how it differs from autobiography. Yes, they are different!! Let me explain.

The Difference Between Memoir and Autobiography

Memoir and autobiography are often considered synonymous, but a closer examination shows us distinct differences between the two genres. While autobiographies provide a comprehensive account of a person's life, memoirs focus on specific moments or themes, offering a deeper exploration of the author's experiences and emotions. In essence, a good memoir is akin to any compelling story, complete with character development, narrative arc, and emotional resonance.
To illustrate this point, let's delve into the works of some renowned memoirists, including Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Each of these memoirs exemplifies how the art of storytelling transcends the boundaries of traditional autobiography.

A memoir should have some uplifting quality, inspiring or illuminating, and that's what separates a life story that can influence other people. -Mitch Albom

Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father is a masterful exploration of identity and belonging. Through vivid recollections of his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia, Obama paints a complex portrait of himself as a biracial man navigating the complexities of race and culture. By interweaving personal anecdotes with broader social and political commentary, Obama crafts a narrative that resonates with readers on both a personal and universal level. Be still my heart.
Similarly, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis offers a unique perspective on growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Through a series of graphic novel vignettes, Satrapi chronicles her experiences as a young girl coming of age in a society undergoing profound upheaval. By blending humor, tragedy, and poignant reflection, Satrapi creates a rich tapestry of memory that captures the essence of a tumultuous period in history.
Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking takes a more introspective approach, chronicling the year following the sudden death of her husband. As Didion grapples with grief and loss, she offers readers a candid glimpse into the human condition and the fragile nature of existence. Through spare prose and searing honesty, Didion crafts a memoir that is as raw as it is profound, inviting readers to confront their own mortality and the complexities of love and loss.
Finally, Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a seminal work that defies categorization. Blending elements of autobiography, memoir, and fiction, Angelou chronicles her journey from a troubled childhood in the Jim Crow South to becoming a celebrated writer and activist. With lyrical prose and unflinching honesty, Angelou invites readers into her world, illuminating the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
What unites these diverse memoirs is their ability to eclipse the constraints of autobiography and resonate with readers as powerful works of storytelling. That is where the Bardsy Method comes in. You knew this was coming, right?

If you want a large readership for your memoir, it will need to rise above me-moir to become a compelling story that readers can compare to their own experiences, and draw from for inspiration.

The Bardsy Method: Memoir

We at Bardsy define story as a coherent combination of five elements: character, world, conflict, theme and plot. In our memoir groups, as in all our groups, we will encourage our writers to create more than laundry lists of events. We will also call out self-indulgent prattle (in our kind and constructive way, of course!). The bottom line is, if you want a large readership for your memoir, you will need to rise above me-moir to create a compelling story that readers will compare to their own experiences, and find meaning. Your story will require deeply resonant characters, universal struggles, fascinating specificity of place and time, and both internal and external conflict. These will need to be laid out along a plot line that moves forward inexorably, reaches a satisfying climax, and finally, absorbs back into the strands of the protagonist's life, and - hopefully - the reader’s, too.
The bottom line is, the art of memoir is not merely about recounting the events of one's life but rather about crafting a narrative that speaks to the universal truths of human experience. Whether exploring themes of identity, loss, or resilience, the best memoirs remind us that our individual stories are part of a larger tapestry of humanity, bound together by the shared threads of love, longing, and hope. As readers, we are invited to embark on a journey of self-discovery, guided by the words of those brave enough to share their stories with the world.
