NaNoWriMo Prep Contest: The Short and Long of It

Bardsy is pleased to announce our latest no fee contest, guaranteed to get you off to a great start for NaNoWriMo. The goal: write a short story now that's worthy of adapting into a novel later! This contest is open to all short stories that meet the requirements below.

Official Rules

ENTRY PERIOD: 9/22/21 to 11/1/21
11:59 PM PDT. No late entries will be accepted.
READING PERIOD: 11/5/21 to 11/11/21
Finalists will be announced to give the community time to read, discuss & share qualified entries. Bardsy is a supportive online community, all comments must be constructive and kind. We will remove comments deemed counterproductive.
JUDGING: ~ 11/13/2021
The winner will be notified and announced. Bardsy staff will consider all finalists as well as the amount and content of comments. The prize will be awarded to the story that has the most potential while demonstrating Bardsy’s principles of good storytelling.


The Short and Long of It - $299

  • Original short stories that are at least 1,200 words and a maximum of 3,000 words.
  • Previously unpublished stories, entered only through the procedures detailed above, and in English.
  • Writing that follows our guidelines for great — not good — stories. Not sure what we mean? Ace our Better Storytelling course and you’ll be a shoo-in!
  • The winner will receive $299, plus a free Bardsy Elite membership for 9 months, worth $720, to help you complete your novel. This includes assignment to a biweekly, facilitated writing group as well as monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with a Bardsy author educator.
  • The winning author and story may be showcased on the site, blog and social media. Their story and bio may also be included in other promotions (pursuant to terms and conditions below).
  • All finalists will receive a free Bardsy Elite membership for 3 months, worth $240, to help you complete your novel. This includes assignment to a biweekly, facilitated writing group as well as monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with a Bardsy author educator.

  2. Write or paste your story, then click PUBLISH / STYLE and check SUBMITTED TO CONTEST when you're ready.

Additional Rules

Bardsy, Inc. retains the right to disqualify stories that have content considered actually or potentially objectionable in the view of any of our judge(s) or staff, without exception or explanation. Examples include, but are not limited to, violence or sex we consider gratuitous or inappropriate, intellectual property violation, invasion of privacy, publicity or disparagement of people or places, or content we view as actually or potentially objectionable for any reason. We are not obligated to screen for or identify any such matter and do not assure we will identify or disqualify an entry on the above grounds.

Authors retain ownership of their work. By submitting an entry, you grant Bardsy unlimited, non-exclusive, royalty free, perpetual publication and promotion rights to the story, and use of your name and likeness, in any and all media of Bardsy’s choice. Bardsy will have the right, even if we do not exercise the right, at any time(s) to make edits, publish and/or promote portions or abridged versions of the story. Bardsy may be willing, but will not be obligated, to comply with author’s request to publish, cease publication, edit or modify the story or author name. With the exception of contest finalists, winners, and subscribers, these publishing rights will expire ninety days after winners are announced. If the story has not been removed from the site within the given timeframe, author agrees to provide Bardsy with written notice of non-compliance at, and grant an additional two weeks from verifiable receipt of this request, to remove the story from the site.

An entrant may enter multiple stories. Each entry must be submitted separately. Entrant must notify us in writing at, if the work has also been or is being submitted elsewhere, and must notify us at the same email address, immediately if the work is accepted by another publisher for publication, promotion or for a prize.

A request to withdraw a submission from the Contest may be directed to us at We may be willing, but are not obligated, to grant the request. A request is more likely to be granted if received at least 72 hours before judging begins. The Contest is sponsored by Bardsy, Inc. The Contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook or any other social media site, each and all of which you release from any and all liability.

Entry or other participation constitutes entrant’s agreement to and acceptance of the Official Rules and of the decisions of Bardsy, Inc., which are final and binding. Winning a prize is contingent on being compliant with these Official Rules and fulfilling all other requirements herein.

For a story with joint or multiple authors, each author is deemed to agree to and accept the Official Rules and decisions of Bardsy, Inc. The individual who submits the story represents and warrants that all joint and/or multiple authors agreed to the Official Rules and decisions of Bardsy, Inc. Bardsy, Inc. reserves the right to direct any prize or award to the first named author who shall be responsible for any division among authors, or to issue the prize or award in the names of multiple authors. In the event of multiple claimants to a prize or award, Bardsy, Inc. may elect to divide and allocate a prize or award so that in the aggregate, the total prize or award does not exceed the one prize or award for which the story is eligible.

The Contest is open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico who are at least age eighteen (18) at the time of entry. Employees and contractors of Bardsy, Inc. and any of its affiliated entities, advertising and promotion agencies, other companies associated with the Contest, and the immediate families (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members of any of the foregoing, are not eligible.

The Contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Contest is void and inapplicable where prohibited by law. Entrants in such jurisdictions are ineligible. Winners must provide an appropriate tax form (W9 or W8BEN) and will be required to sign a release to receive the cash award or other prize. If these are not received within 30 days of the request date, the award or other prize will be forfeited. Forfeited award or prize will not be awarded to anyone else. Winner is responsible to pay any and all taxes associated with receipt of a prize.

After the entry deadline passes, you will not be able to access the online entry system. You may be able to view the story on the website. Bardsy, Inc. is not obligated to post the story. If posted, Bardsy, Inc. reserves the right to remove the story at any time, to repost, to remove again, all the foregoing any number of times and at any time(s).

Entrant represents and warrants to Bardsy, Inc. that the entry is entrant’s original work, that the work is entrant’s property, and that the entrant has the right to enter and to grant Bardsy, Inc. the rights granted herein.

Bardsy, Inc. is not liable for any copyright infringement, invasion of privacy, publicity, disparagement or defamation or other violation of any rights of any person or entity by an entrant. Non-Winner Notification: Entrants not selected as winners will not be notified individually; non-winners will be emailed a competition status update in the weeks following the winner notification date. If you enter multiple times, please excuse duplicate emails, as you may receive an email for each separate entry.

If operation, security, or administration of the Contest is impaired in any way for any reason, including, but not limited to intentional or accidental fraud, virus, bug, work, unauthorized human intervention or other technical problem, or if the Contest is unable to run as planned for any reason, in the judgment of Bardsy, Inc., we may, in our discretion, (a) suspend the Contest to address the impairment and then resume the Contest in a manner we believe best conforms to the spirit of these Official Rules, or (b) terminate the Contest and, if terminated, choose not to award some or all prizes or choose to award prizes at random from among eligible, non-suspect entries received up to the time of impairment, or (c) take other steps.

Bardsy, Inc. reserves the right to disqualify any individual(s) or group or category or class of persons or entrants we find or suspect to have done or attempted to do or who may have done any of the following: tampered with the entry process or operation of the Contest, or acted in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportspersonlike or disruptive manner, or other act or thing we view as violating the content or purpose or spirit of the Official Rules.

Any attempt by any person to damage the website or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may violate criminal and civil law. Bardsy, Inc. reserves the right to recover damages (including attorney fees) and other remedies to the fullest extent permitted by law. Failure or delay by Bardsy to enforce any provision of these Official Rules does not waive that provision.


Judges inevitably bring their own views, life experiences, subjectivities, conflicts and biases to the judging process. We desire and instruct our judges to be fair, ethical, free of conflicts-of-interest and impartial. We cannot and do not assure that judges or the judging process, or any aspect of the Contest, also including selection of topics and judging criteria, will be free from bias, conflicts-of-interest or other actual or perceived impediments to complete fairness or impartiality.

Release and Limitations of Liability

By entering the Contest, even if entry is later withdrawn or disqualified, entrant releases and agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Bardsy, Inc. and its affiliated entities, advertising and promotion agencies, other companies associated with the Contest, each of their respective shareholders, members, directors, managers, officers, employees, agents, representatives and insurers and all judges (collectively, “Releasees”) from and against any claim, cause of action, injury, loss or liability arising out of or relating to participation in the Contest or receipt or use of prize or award, including but not limited to (a) technical errors associated with the Contest, such as but not limited to lost, interrupted or unavailable Internet Service Provider (ISP), network, server, wireless service provider, or other connections, availability of accessibility or miscommunications or failed computer, satellite, telephone, cellular tower or cable transmissions, lines, or technical failure or jumbled, scrambled, delayed, or misdirected transmissions or computer hardware or software malfunctions, failures or difficulties: (b) unauthorized human intervention in the Contest; (c) mechanical network, electronic, computer, human, printing or typographic errors; (d) any other errors or problems in connection with or relating to the Contest, including, without limitation, errors in administration, grievance over judging, alleged failure of any judge, alleged dishonesty or impropriety concerning judging, selection of or announcement of winners; or (e) injury, death, loss or damage of any kind, to persons or property which maybe caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrants participation in the Contest, or acceptance, receipt or misuse of prize or award. Entrant agrees that in any claim or cause of action, Releasees’ liability will be limited to cost of entering and participating in the Contest, and in no event shall the entrant be entitled to receive attorney fees. Releasees are not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate information whether caused by site users, tampering, hacking, or by equipment or programming associated with or used in the Contest. Entrant waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.


Except where prohibited, entrant agrees that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of, or connected with or relating to the Contest or any prize or award shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively in the United States District Court for the Central District of California or the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles. Entrant consents to the sole and exclusive jurisdiction and venue of these courts. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, entrant’s rights and obligations, and rights and obligations of Bardsy, Inc. in connection with or relation to the Contest shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, applicable to agreements made in and to be performed entirely within the State of California and thus without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules, which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than that of the State of California.

The provisions of these Official Rules have been drafted with a view to fairness and balance taking into account the ease of entry, absence or minimality of cost to entrant, the absence of any obligation or compulsion to participate, and the entrant’s freedom to choose whether or not to enter or participate. The provisions of these Official Rules shall be interpreted and construed according to their fair meanings and not strictly for or against any entrant or Bardsy, Inc.

These Official Rules were last updated on October 4, 2021 and may be modified by Bardsy, Inc. at any time. Modifications take effect when posted on this site and may be made prospective only or retroactive, at Bardsy’s election.
