2022 Character Anthology & Contest: A Novel Idea

There is no fee to enter.

Prompt: write a short story featuring a character that will inspire a novel.

Focus on the protagonist of your next novel. For example, create a compelling narrative from a defining moment in their backstory, an out-of-character action that foreshadows a key conflict, or an important or problematic relationship that constrains or empowers them.

Every finalist’s story will be published in Bardsy’s 2022 Character anthology, and finalists will receive a cash prize as detailed below.

What we’re not looking for: your first chapter, or an entire novel crunched to the word limit. Your story should stand on its own. Toward this end, you must evaluate it, honestly, using our Publishability Index, as described below.

No story that we rate as less than 55 will be considered. Self-evaluate your story as honestly as you can, utilizing our FREE publishability index (PI) aide. If you can't rate your story to above 55 (or even if you can!), please use the wealth of resources we offer to make your story the best it can be. Writing success invariably requires perseverance and thoughtful revision.
